other names- Pitcherplant, California Pitcherplant habitat- acidic bogs, seeps, wet meadows in coniferous forests range- limited distribution, Del Norte Coastal region through Klamath, Cascade and high Sierra mountains, North to Western Oregon description- highly modified hollow tubular hooded slightly transluscent leaf structure with mustache-shaped appendages below hood near opening, stiff downward pointing hairs inside trap insects which dissolve in pool of acidic liquid in base of leaf; single showy nodding flower with yellowish-green oblong sepals and maroonish-brown veined petals forming a pendant cup, 12 to 15 stamens with maroon anthers surround a 5-lobed style etymology- after William Darlington, 19th century American Botanist. |
