other names- chill-grass, bluegrass habitat- moist open montane to sub-alpine grassy meadows from 2700 to 9000 ft range- California mountains, E to intermountain states description- flattened nodal stem with narrow basal leaves, flowers in sparse umbel-like clusters, six blue notched and toothed petals with yellow bases, fused protruding filament below yellow stamens etymology- Sys, Greek for pig; rhynos, Greek for nose, pigs have a habit of digging the roots of this genus; Blue-eyed grass, while not a grass, from the grasslike appearance of the leaves applications- S. atlanticum leaves traditionally used as a purgative and bitter tonic. Hawaiian species, S. acre used as blue dye for tattoos, leaves applied to treat skin disease.
