family- Liliaceae, Lily location- near Hotlum Lava flow, Mount Shasta, CA elevation- 3600 ft date-3/093/05

other names- star-lily, common star lily habitat- montane sandy flats, high sagebrush and juniper desert, prairie range- Northern California dry mountains to 7500 ft, N to Oregon, E to Kansas description- stemless plant; a basal rosette of thick linear leaves with white margins near the tips surrounds a narrow corolla tube which emerges directly from the fleshy root; six transluscent white lanceolate petals, single style, the clublike stigma is slightly three-lobed, six yellow anthers on protruding white filaments etymology- from the Greek: leuco-white, krinum, lily applications- A poultice of pulverized roots has been applied to sores and swellings. As with many other lilies, Native Americans ate the cooked root.
